Following a decision of the Council of Ministers, the Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Defence and the Cyprus Electricity Authority (CEC) for the implementation of the project for the installation of photovoltaic and energy storage systems in facilities of the Ministry of Defence and the National Guard (GNF) was signed today at the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The budget of the project, which is expected to start being implemented in the near future with a completion horizon of three years, will be entirely covered by the European Union's structural funds, in particular through the "THALIA 2021-2027" programme, from which the Ministry of Defence has secured funding of €19 million.

The installation of photovoltaic systems and energy storage systems in facilities of the Ministry of Public Works and the NF is part of the general framework for the implementation of the Governance Programme of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, with priority to Clean Energy.

The total capacity of the photovoltaic systems to be installed is estimated at 12 MW.

The total capacity of the photovoltaic systems to be installed is estimated at 12 MW. With their capacity, they are expected to contribute around 2.5% of the achievement of the targets of the Republic of Cyprus in the field of Renewable Energy Sources, set in the National Plan of Cyprus for Energy and Climate for the period 2021-2030.

In addition to the production of energy from renewable sources and the significant contribution to the reduction of the carbon footprint, there are also expected to be significant savings in the budget of the Ministry of National Economy, from the reduction of electricity consumption in the NF facilities.
