Councillor Mrs. Rita Theodorou Superman, Special Rapporteur of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) on combating terrorism and organized crime, participated today in the 3rd Parliamentary Strategy Dialogue on Combating Terrorism, organized by the UN Office for the Fight against Terrorism, in Istanbul.

The main topic of discussion was the terrorist threat against vulnerable targets and the challenges of protecting religious sites, symbols and objects.

In her intervention, Ms. Superman condemned any kind of offensive action against places of worship and stressed the need to promote actions to eliminate stereotypes and intolerance that perpetuate the cycle of violence. Peace and security, she said, cannot be achieved unless we first seek mutual understanding, tolerance and respect between all the different elements in societies and around the world.

Superman noted that the CBM, since its creation, has made peace-building through the promotion of regional synergy and intercultural and inter-religious dialogue its main objective. To this end, she added, the CMC serves as a platform for inter-parliamentary dialogue and is an excellent example of good cooperation among the Mediterranean countries.

Superman stressed that the CMC remains firmly committed to the principles of international law, democracy and human rights and fundamental freedoms and endorses the UN's concerns about the increase in attacks on religious sites. It expressed the readiness of the CMM to promote the implementation by its Member Parliaments of the specialized "Thematic Guides" on the protection of particularly vulnerable targets from terrorist attacks, prepared by the UN Office for the Suppression of Terrorism.
