The Deputy Ministry of Culture, following the announcement of the results of the evaluation procedure for the partial funding of theatrical productions for the first half of 2024, but also following the reactions of some organized groups, wishes to clarify the following:
The Ministry of State for Culture fully understands the need for more support for all sectors related to culture, including, of course, the theatre sector, and is working systematically in this direction.
The intention and commitment of the Ministry of State is, with the existing means and resources at its disposal, to support as many theatre productions as possible from as many institutions as possible. The guiding principle is to respect and offer equal opportunities to all, without exception, the bodies that represent and undoubtedly contribute to the culture of our country.
With regard to the Thymelis Plan for the first half of 2024, it is stated that around €654,000 will be made available to fund professional theatre productions, compared to €570,000 allocated in the corresponding period of 2023.
With regard to the Thymelis Plan for the first half of 2024, it is stated that around €654,000 will be made available to fund professional theatre productions, compared to €570,000 allocated in the corresponding period of 2023. This is an increase of 15%.
This amount of €654,000 for the first half of the THYMELI Plan was distributed, based on the criteria set, to 18 entities - out of the 19 that applied - of which.
(b) 7 have received a reduced sponsorship compared to last year.
It is reported that a similar amount will be allocated through an evaluation process for the second half of 2024, channelling a total amount of €1,300,000 to Cypriot theatre in 2024 for partial sponsorship of performances.
It is reported that a similar amount will be allocated through an evaluation process for the second half of 2024, channelling a total amount of €1,300,000 to Cypriot theatre in 2024 for partial sponsorship of performances. It should also be noted that the THYMELI Scheme offers only partial support for the production of theatrical performances and not the full funding of productions.
To further support theatrical institutions, the "Operational Expenditure Coverage Scheme 2024" enables the institutions to receive additional funding of up to €20,000. The latter Plan favours and supports theatres that have a "home", providing increased appropriations to this Plan compared to previous years, channelling an additional allocation of €200,000 to the Cypriot theatre in support of it.
Finally, the sponsorship plan POLITISM, subcategory THEATRE, allows yet another important source of funding for theatre institutions.
It is recalled that the THYMELI Project recently came under the Deputy Ministry of Culture and its legacy was both the self-evident weaknesses of the original project, which are gradually being improved, and the need to balance the many and conflicting needs and voices within the field of Cypriot theatre. It is a fact that several positive steps have been taken in the THYMELI Plan and to zero in on its significant improvements and the egalitarianism it creates through its evaluation process does it an injustice, just as it does an injustice to the institutions that managed by their merit and high scores to be part of the sponsorship of the THYMELI Plan.
The Ministry of State expresses its intention to work together with all stakeholders, in good faith and respecting the needs of all parties involved, to further upgrade the Plan, always within the framework of its budgetary possibilities and the newly established procedures. The common goal of all should be to create a healthy theatre ecosystem that promotes pluralism, inclusion, excellence and sustainability. We believe that the good intention of all parties involved is a given.
Further to the above, it is noted that in line with a previous commitment of the Ministry of State, but also with the aim of improving the Plan, a public consultation will be held in February next year for an in-depth discussion of the issues and points that need improvement. We aim to announce the revised plan for the second half of the year by the end of March, so that stakeholders have sufficient time to prepare their proposals.
