During today's (11/07/24) regular briefing of the international media at the United Nations (UN), the Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Stéphane Dujarric, said that the Security Council held consultations on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Security Council members were briefed by the Special Representative and Head of UNFICYP, Mr. Colin Steward.
He also added that the Secretary-General had yesterday received Ms. Holguín's report on her efforts to find common ground on the way forward in Cyprus. The Secretary-General is now considering the recommendations of her report in order to propose next steps to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders.
Asked by the Palestinian correspondent of Al-Quds Al-Arabi whether there are any new ideas in Ms. Holguín's report, such as a two-state solution and moving away from the federation option because it is becoming unsustainable, Mr. Dujarric said that the report is to the Secretary General, who is examining it and will act accordingly.
In response to a question from the CBC correspondent whether he could provide more information about the meeting between the Secretary General and Ms. Holguín, the Spokesperson noted that he had no further information. Her report was her report to the Secretary-General. Apparently the Secretary-General has been quite busy since the beginning of his mandate. He will review the report and then talk about next steps.
