During yesterday's (13.06.24) regular briefing of the international media at the United Nations (UN), the Deputy Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Farhan Haq read out the following statement.

"The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, UNFICYP, issued a statement stressing its commitment to maintaining security and calm within the buffer zone. In cooperation with UNHCR, the Mission is providing basic humanitarian assistance, such as food, water, shelter and medical assistance, to vulnerable migrants, including women and children."

While understanding the concerns with irregular crossings, the Mission stressed the importance of asylum seekers having unimpeded access to asylum procedures as provided for under national, European and international refugee law. The Organization is in discussions with the Republic of Cyprus to address the growing humanitarian challenges in the buffer zone."
