Announcement by the Nicosia Drainage Board

In relation to a post on Social Media, we are particularly saddened by the ease with which insinuations are made about the service of the Drainage Board, without taking into account the actual circumstances and data.

The Nicosia Drainage Board, following its announcement on 31 December 2021, regarding the collapse of a main sewage transport pipeline at the Mias Milias Wastewater Treatment Plant, informs of the following:

1. 1.1.

2. It is the largest and most important part of the entire collection network. A significant portion, some 3 km, is located within the buffer zone and within the occupied area, and outside the daily control of the Council.

3. The pipeline was installed in the early 1970s and remained inactive until 1980.

4. Since the evening of 30 December 2021, following the discharge of a large amount of stormwater into the pipeline in question, its collapse was caused, both within the buffer zone and on Markos Botsaris Street near the Kaimaklion Industrial Area.

5. Since then and on an ongoing basis, since 31 December 2021, the Council, in cooperation with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, has been carrying out work to address the emergency situation and fully restore the flow of wastewater to the Mias Milias Plant. By 18 January 2022, within the buffer zone, 170 metres of the collapsed pipeline has been replaced and as of 19 January 2022, the Council's work is focused within Markos Botsaris Street. As of the morning of 28 January 2022, the removal of any obstructions and collapses that existed on the pipeline has been achieved, with the entirety of the wastewater now flowing towards the Mias Milias Wastewater Treatment Plant.

6. Council employees are continuing their superhuman efforts to fix the problem. Odor phenomena that have been observed in the area will be lifted in the next few days considering the current restoration of the flow to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
