[PIO] Recommendations of the Fire Service to the public on fire safety issues

On the occasion of the incident to which the Fire Service responded in an area of the Municipality of Egomi, after an explosion of an explosive gas mixture and the huge destruction it caused, fortunately without casualties but with injuries, the issue of the role of the Fire Service as a competent advisory authority on fire safety issues arises. As a result of the above, the Fire Service reminds the public that:

[*]In the case of any newly built building, the owner must apply for a building permit to each competent authority (Municipalities, Provincial Administrations and the Department of Urban Planning and Zoning), by submitting the relevant architectural plans, where the Fire Service, at the request of the competent authorities involved, will give its opinion on active and passive fire protection issues. [*]In case of any additions or change of use of existing buildings, the owner must also submit the corresponding architectural plans with the changes to the competent authorities. The Fire Service, following a new request from the above-mentioned Authorities, must again, as an advisory authority, give its views on active and passive fire protection.

Following various tragic incidents, the important role of the Fire Service's advisory opinions on fire safety issues relating to each individual building has been demonstrated. The possible failure of the owner to comply with the conditions set by the Fire Service before or after the construction of any sub-structure can have disastrous consequences for the occupants in the event of a fire.

As a result of the above, we urge the public to be particularly careful, to follow the legal state procedures for securing the appropriate construction and operating permits, either during the initial construction or afterwards (in case of any additions, or change of use of their existing outbuildings) and to take seriously the Fire Department's advisory opinions on fire safety issues, thus ensuring the safety of their occupants in the event of a fire.
