The initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to reassess the status of areas in Syria and declassify certain areas in the country, based on the current realities, will be the focus of the bilateral contacts that Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou will have in Denmark, the Czech Republic and Greece on April 10, 11 and 12, respectively.

At the meetings, it is expected, among other things, to examine practical ways to start the substantive examination of asylum applications of Syrian nationals, given that at the moment persons of Syrian origin, coming from a non-safe country, are almost automatically granted subsidiary protection status in any country. Ioannou will convey the position that the conditions are ripe to establish strict criteria that will allow states to reject asylum claims of Syrians who meet certain characteristics.

In particular, Ioannou leaves tomorrow for Denmark, where he will meet with the country's Minister of Immigration and Integration, Mr. Kaare Dybvad Bek, as well as with senior officials of the Immigration Service and the Refugee Appeals Board. On Thursday, 11 April, the Minister of Interior will travel to the Czech Republic, where he will meet with the Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Mr. Vít Rakušan. Finally, on Friday, 12 April, Mr Ioannou will be in the Greek capital, where he will hold a meeting with the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Mr V.V. Ioannou. Dimitris Kairidis.
