I met Andreas Konstantinidis around the end of 1987. He was one of the first members of the Friends of Akamas, until a few days ago when he passed away. With firm values, strong opinions and views on environmental issues and on the real dimension of the need to protect the Akamas Peninsula through the harmonious coexistence of nature and the people of the region.
This year's World Environment Day finds us poorer... as announced by the Ecological Intervention - Friends of Akamas.
And, indeed, no better day could have been chosen for this event in memory of Andrea. Today, World Environment Day is a reminder that protecting nature is the duty and responsibility of all of us, government agencies and citizens alike. Andreas leaves us with a heavy legacy in terms of our obligation to protect nature and place, without discount.
The preservation of the Akamas Peninsula, and not only, for which Andreas fought, is symbolic of the wider battle around the planet to protect the environment, to safeguard human survival.
Today's event honours both Andreas Konstantinidis as a protagonist in the struggle for the environment and for his creative contribution. The very important documentary about Akamas that we will see next, produced by the Cyprus Radio Foundation, directed by the late Andreas Konstantinidis in 1988, is a striking testimony to our long-standing struggles for the preservation of the land.
We thank the Cyprus Radio Foundation, the event's communication sponsor, for the loan of the film from its archive and for hosting the screening and, above all, for its long-standing contribution to environmental issues in Cyprus through its television and radio programmes.

Note: The screening of the documentary "Akamas" was part of World Environment Day celebrations and was under the auspices of the Office of the Environment Commissioner.
