With the aim of empowering women in their business activities and promoting gender equality in the economy and society, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus hosted, a two-day workshop in Nicosia in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Division for the Promotion of Women's Empowerment (UNIDO PWE). The workshop was attended by women from the countries of the "MENA" region, namely: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. The two-day workshop was co-organized and co-funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNIDO. At the same time, they participated in workshops on promoting gender equality in business and developing leadership skills in the business sector. The participants exchanged views and experiences on the problems they face in business in their countries.
In a statement, Gender Equality Commissioner Ms. Josie Christodoulou noted that "the workshop is very important because it takes place in the context of strengthening gender mainstreaming in foreign policy. She added that promoting equality between men and women through their empowerment, including in business, in the region is one of our objectives". He also mentioned that in Cyprus, among men and women living on the poverty line, the majority are women over 60 years old. To address this issue, she added, the Office of the Equality Commissioner is planning various actions such as training related to financial and digital empowerment for women entrepreneurs living in remote areas. The ultimate goal, she said, is to eradicate poverty for both women and men."
Ms Cecilia Estrada, Director of the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Sector at UNIDO, said that women's entrepreneurship is one of the areas that needs more support to further develop in the region. Women, in this sector, she said, need more help to access the digital market and finance. She also said that these issues were discussed at the two-day workshop and the women who came to Cyprus, from countries in the surrounding region, were able to gain more knowledge and acquire the necessary skills, so that they could better cope with the obstacles they face in their daily lives and also be able to further develop their business activities.
