[PIO] Press Release of the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons and Victims

The Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons and Victims met today, Tuesday, 1 March 2022, and discussed the following issues:

1. The delay in the titling of the houses in the Xylofagos self-housing settlement which have been allocated according to income criteria since 2009.

The Commission was informed by the representative of the Larnaca District Administration on the progress of the implementation of the land titling project, as well as on the removal of asbestos from the houses located in the Xylofagou housing estate. As reported, the beneficiaries of 22 land plots have settled their financial obligations, however they have not been granted a certificate of final approval by the state, as they themselves have not completed an application in order to be issued with the said certificate. It was also reported that after an investigation by officials of the Larnaca District Administration, the need to remove asbestos from 37 houses was identified, at a cost of €0.5 million

2. The problems in the electrical installations of the refugee settlements and especially in the settlement "Makarios C" and the need to upgrade them. Christos Seneki, Nikos Kettirou, Christos Christos Christofidis, Christos Christofias and Zacharias Koulias)

The above item was postponed and will be considered at a forthcoming meeting of the Commission.

3. Patients' problems.

(Ex officio examination on the recommendation of Messrs. Nikos Kettirou, Christos Christofidis, Christos Christofias, Nikos Georgiou, George Karoulla, Rita Theodorou Superman, Onoufrios Koulla, Christos Seneca, Zacharias Koulias and Michael Yakoomi)

In the context of the examination of the matter, the Director General of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance informed the members of the Committee that a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance will be held next Thursday, 3 March 2022, in order to find solutions to the problems faced by the victims. The Committee decided to await the results of this meeting and come back to consider the issue.
