The Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs met today, Tuesday, 1 February 2022, and discussed the following topic:
Developments in EU-Turkey relations and Turkish foreign policy.
(Extraordinary examination on the recommendation of Mr. Haris Georgiades)
(7.9.2021)
(File No. 23.04.038.1149-2021)
The Commission continued the discussion on the above item, which began in September 2021, on the internal situation in Turkey and its impact on the conduct of Turkish policy. On this topic, academics Konstantinos Filis and Nikos Moudouros, who attended the Commission's meeting, presented, through a brief historical review, the course of the formation of Turkey's political system and the reasons for the rise of Islamism. Recent political and socio-economic developments in the country were then analysed and assessments were made of future developments in view of next year's presidential elections, as well as the dynamics that are expected to develop and influence Turkish foreign policy, particularly Greek-Turkish relations and the Turkish position on the Cyprus problem.
