The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources met today, Tuesday, 8 February 2022, to discuss the following matters:
1.The Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 2022
(File No: 23.01.063.003-2022)
The Committee began clause-by-clause discussion of the above bill, the purpose of which is to amend the Fisheries Act to provide the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment with the authority to develop management plans for marine areas where fishing and/or vessel passage is prohibited. The Committee, having concluded its article-by-article discussion of the Bill, reserved its position on its provisions at its next meeting.
2. The understaffing of the Forestry Department, the problems likely to arise and the need for further recruitment in the Forestry Department.
(Ex-officio examination on the recommendation of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources)
(No. File: 23.04.038.1096-2021)
The above matter, which was registered by the Committee under the ex officio procedure, concerns the long-standing problem of understaffing of the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, as well as the need to provide the Department with the necessary technical equipment. It should be noted that the Commission had discussed this issue at a previous meeting, at which it was decided to give the relevant government departments time to strengthen the department in terms of manpower and technical equipment, so that the department would be able to deal immediately and effectively with any fires during the summer season.
However, due to the absence of the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment from today's meeting of the Commission, and given that the Commission was unable to meet with the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment during the summer season, it was decided to give the relevant government departments time to strengthen the department in terms of manpower and technical equipment, so that the department would be able to deal immediately and effectively with any fires during the summer season. The Fisheries (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 2022
(Fak. No.: 23.01.062.200-2021)
The Commission, having taken a position on the provisions of the above bill, the purpose of which is to regulate the possibility of drawing up management plans for marine protected areas in the Republic, decided to submit the bill to the plenary session of the House, after the consultation stage on amendments that may be tabled by MPs, members and non-members of the Commission.
