[PIO] Press conference on the occasion of the "German Language Weeks 2023"

A press conference was held today at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth on the occasion of the "German Language Weeks 2023". In addition to the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athina Michaelidou, the Ambassador of Germany, Ms Anke Schlimm, the Ambassador of Austria, Ms Dorothea Auer, the Ambassador of Switzerland, Mr Christoph Burgener, and the Director of the Goethe Institute Cyprus, Ms Gabriele Gauler, addressed the conference.

The "German Language Weeks" is an annual festival organised every autumn by the Embassies of Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. A series of activities and events related to the German language and the culture of German-speaking countries take place within the framework of this institution.

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth supports the "German Language Weeks", recognising the importance of the German language. Through the promotion of the German language, the benefits of multilingualism and intercultural dialogue are highlighted and the relations between Cyprus, Austria, Germany and Switzerland are further developed.

The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs. Athena Michaelidou, in her greeting, stressed the advantages of multilingualism in the modern world and praised the importance and usefulness of the German language. In addition, she also referred to the pilot programme of German language learning in public schools, which has started to be implemented from the current school year in selected Gymnasiums and Lyceums in Nicosia and Limassol. Through this pilot programme, students will be given the opportunity to learn German at a very good level, under the guidance of the Goethe Institute Cyprus, and will be provided with a certification of their language learning level.

The "German Language Weeks 2023" will run from 1 to 16 November 2023.
