The results of the first vote of the "Citizen's Voice" Consultative Voting Platform were announced today by the Commissioner for Citizens, Mr.Panagiotis Palates. A total of 1,229 people participated in the question on reducing the voting age to 17 or 16 years old, with a response rate of 59.5% disagreeing with the reduction of the voting age and 40.5% agreeing. Mr. Palates referred to the consultative nature of the platform and the relevant analyses of the results by the University Research Centre of Field.

In the context of the effort to mitigate the democratic deficit as well as to strengthen the politicisation of young citizens, a problem created by the negative result of the voting conducted by the "Voice of the Citizen" platform, Mr. Palates also announced the launch of a coordinated action in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for the implementation of the Structured Democratic Dialogue (SDD) model in Public Education. The Government's aim is to spread the implementation of this model of IDM across the whole spectrum of society.
Palates also announced the re-filing of the revised Citizens' Initiative Bill under the title "The Citizens' Initiative Law of 2024". The Bill institutionally enshrines the right for citizens, through the collection of a certain number of signatures, to participate in the executive branch of government. The proposed Bill has already been posted on the H-Consultation website and follows all legal procedures for scrutiny and promotion.
The Office of the Ombudsman has taken over the reactivation of the Consultation Mechanism with the Cyprus Children's Council, which was suspended due to the pandemic. The first meeting has already taken place with all participants, during which issues were discussed and a framework for the functioning of the Mechanism was established.
Finally, Mr. Palates announced the creation of a web site (application) under the title "Digital NGO Hub", which will be an information centre for all Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and will facilitate the dissemination of their work.
