The Co-operative Societies Service, as the competent authority for the promotion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Cyprus and in the context of the implementation of the project "Corporate Sustainability Supporting Framework" (CSR project), which is co-funded by the Financial Mechanisms of the European Economic Area, organised on Thursday 07/03/2024 at the "Theophilos Georgiades" Amphitheatre at the Press and Information Office a press conference in relation to the holding of information/training workshops on CSR in all cities and the registration of companies in the CSR Register.

Κατά την speech Environment Commissioner Ms Antonia Theodosiou, under whose auspices the workshops were held, referred to the evolution of CSR from events previously held by businesses, mainly for charitable purposes, the incorporation of the terms of sustainability and responsible entrepreneurship into the concept of CSR, linking it to every effort to create conditions that favour sustainable, environmentally friendly development in the medium and long term. He also mentioned that today, businesses, in addition to their business activity, are called upon to act as responsible social partners, adding that an essential role in sustainable development is the implementation of the 17 United Nations Goals.

The Supervisor of Cooperative Societies and Social Enterprises (SCE), Mr Cyprus Protopapas, referred to the important role that the Cooperative Societies Service plays in raising awareness among businesses for the adoption of CSR in the way they operate and in their activities. However, as he said, there is still a long way to go before we reach the desired results.

In the context of the broader vision of CSR to promote issues in the three main pillars, environment, society and corporate governance, there was a common recognition of the need to change the culture and mindset of all stakeholders, giving importance to collectivity, acquiring new skills, perceptions and knowledge.

The Supervisor reported that the HSE in cooperation with the Cyprus Standards Organisation prepared a National CSR Specification and a Guide, which provides the requirements for defining, improving, maintaining and implementing a CSR management system in order to integrate it into the strategic planning, operation and activities of enterprises.

Then the CSR Project Coordinator, Mr. Marinos Aniftos, presented the Project's actions, which aim at the adoption by interested enterprises of the National CSR Specification in the CSR management system they have already developed or intend to develop. He noted that once the interested enterprises obtain relevant certification from an accredited body, they will be able to register in the State CSR Register, which has been developed by the YSE in the framework of the Project. Upon registration in the Registry, a certificate of registration will be issued to them electronically.

It was noted that enterprises that pioneer by registering in the CSR Registry by next May, becoming role models for other enterprises, especially smaller ones, will be awarded at an event to be scheduled. The ultimate goal, he said, is the development of a Corporate Sustainability Support Framework in Cyprus.
