In his presentation, the President of the National e-Health Authority (HAEA), Professor Christos N. At the two-day health exhibition "Medical Health Expo Cy", which takes place today and tomorrow in Nicosia under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.
Mr. Schizas explained the mission of EAHY, stressing that in order to create a National E-Health Ecosystem, there is a need for faithful implementation of the relevant legislation, organization of the Single Electronic Health Register of the citizen, the possibility of cross-border care, telemedicine, and interconnection at least with the rest of the European Union (EU) countries.
He noted that the introduction of the idea of e-health and its practical implementation in a patient-centred environment dates back to the 1990s in Cyprus and that we were the first EU country to pass specific legislation, setting an example for other countries to follow. Based on Article 10 of the pending Regulation for the regulation of the European Health Data Space (EHR), each Member State is required to establish an independent National e-Health Authority, as Cyprus has already done since 2019.
Therefore, Cyprus, through the EHR, is actively contributing to the formulation and implementation of the proposed European Regulation for the regulation of health data. The recognition of HAEA's contribution is demonstrated by the fact that the EU has entrusted it with the overall coordination of a Joint Action involving all Member States to establish the framework for the operation and implementation of the Regulation, and the definition of the content of the Single Electronic Health Record. The Single Health Register will be adopted by all Member States after being piloted in Cyprus.
According to Mr Schiza, the newly created EXΔY is a central building block of the European Health Union and a milestone in the digital transformation of the EU, which aims to improve healthcare delivery across the EU by enabling citizens to check their health data in their country of origin or in other EU countries. It also aims to provide a coherent, secure, reliable and efficient framework for the use of health data by health professionals and fosters the promotion of a true single market for digital health services and products.
The ultimate goal and shared European vision is the full implementation of eHealth, which will bring about a reduction in disease through better prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and health management, with a consequent huge reduction in the cost of National Ecosystems.
