From 31 August to 14 September 2023, the National Guard will participate with personnel and assets in the International Transfrontier Exercise "BRIGHT STAR 2023", which is taking place in the greater Alexandria region of Egypt. In addition to the host country, 34 countries are participating in the exercise with personnel and means.

This year's participation of the National Guard is upgraded in terms of both means and personnel, exceeding 70 people. Specifically, traveling to Egypt to participate in the exercise were the PGS ALASIA, two Special Operations Groups of the Commando Command, a Special Operations Group of the Submarine Disaster Unit, for the first time a section of the Mechanized Infantry, four Officers in the International Transfederal Command Headquarters of the exercise, three Naval Command Liaison Officers and three Officers taking part in seminars of operational interest.

The purpose of the exercise is to co-train personnel of the participating countries, enhance interoperability and the ability to conduct large-scale international interdisciplinary operations. In particular, manoeuvring ground forces, special and air operations will be examined, focusing mainly on countering terrorist threats, unmanned systems and unconventional warfare in general. The exercise will culminate on 14 September 2023 with the conduct of a Distinguished Visitor's Day (DVDay).

In the context of exercise "BRIGHT STAR 2023", an international small-scale exercise (PASSEX) "CYP/EGY - 01/2023" took place in the maritime area north of Alexandria on Wednesday, 30 August 2023, between the Naval Command (NAC) and the Egyptian Navy (NAF) of Egypt, with the participation of the PIG ALASIA and the PATH ABU BAKR ALSEDDEQ.

The scenario included Tactical Movements and Advanced Manoeuvres, technical gymnastics, communications exercises and concluded with a salute crossing.

These exercises are considered to be particularly beneficial, as they provide the National Guard personnel with the opportunity to be co-trained with their counterparts from friendly countries, thus promoting the level of training, interoperability and highlighting the excellent relations between the Armed Forces of the participating countries. Moreover, they reflect the wide range of partnerships in which the National Guard participates, actively contributing to the common pursuit of consolidating security and stability in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.

The Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, in the framework of his regular contacts with his Egyptian counterpart on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, had a telephone conversation with Lieutenant General Osama Askar, where the participation of the National Guard in "BRIGHT STAR 2023" was discussed, geostrategic challenges concerning the Eastern Mediterranean, issues of broader interest, as well as ways to upgrade and expand bilateral military cooperation between the two countries and bidding him farewell, thanking him for his sincere cooperation during his leadership.
