The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mrs Anna Koukkidi - Prokopiou participated, together with Ministers from countries that have ratified the Palermo Convention, in the Ministerial Conference, which took place in Sicily on 28 and 29 September, on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Palermo Convention. This is the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, to combat trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. The Conference was also attended by the Assistant Chief of Police for the Prevention and Combating of Crime, Mr. Ioannis Georgiou.
The main topic of the Conference was the Protocol on Combating Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants. The Ministers had the opportunity to take positions and exchange views on three thematic issues, aimed at exchanging information on the measures taken at national level to combat these phenomena. Among other things, they also exchanged views on best practices and cooperation with the aim of combating organised crime.
In her speech, the Minister stressed that Cyprus, due to its geographical location and the instrumentalisation of migratory flows, is among the countries of the European Union with the highest numbers of irregular migration.
Ms Prokopiou stressed that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus is moving purposefully to fight the organised crime networks behind human trafficking and smuggling, but also to provide humanitarian assistance and support to their victims.
