The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr Marios Hartsiotis, participated in the Informal Council of Ministers for Gender Equality of the European Union, which took place in Brussels, between 26 and 27 February 2024.

During the two-day meeting, the European Ministers for Gender Equality had the opportunity to discuss and exchange views on their priorities, future steps and common objectives in the field of promoting gender equality.

In his intervention, the Minister of Justice and Public Order welcomed the important work achieved at European level over the last five years and acknowledged the existence of strong political will and commitment on these issues as one of the most important factors leading to this progress. It also praised the important contribution of civil society organisations to efforts to promote equality and noted that the commitment of all to these issues should be firm and sustained.

During the two-day meeting, the Declaration of the Trio Member States on Gender Equality was signed by the Ministers for Equality of Spain, Belgium and Hungary. During a special ceremony, the Declaration was given in a highly symbolic gesture to the Ministers for Equality of the forthcoming Presidencies of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between them and further promoting equality issues at European level.

The Minister of Justice and Public Order assured that, with the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, Cyprus will focus its attention on priority areas that will add value to what has been achieved so far in the field of gender equality.
