Fifty years later, the deafening sound of the sirens of July 15th and 20th does not allow us to forget, it requires us to continue the struggle until the reunification of our homeland, said the Minister of Interior Mr. Constantinos Ioannou, speaking yesterday, July 6, 2024, at events condemning the anniversaries of the 1974 coup and Turkish invasion, which were held in Serres and Vergina, Imathia.
In his speeches, Ioannou referred to the dramatic consequences that the Cypriot people continue to experience as a result of the coup and the Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation. The violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms, our thousands of refugees and dead, the humanitarian aspect of the missing persons, do not allow us to give up the struggle for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country, the Minister of Interior said.
Despite the intransigence and provocative claims of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side for a two-state solution, the Minister noted, the Greek Cypriot side remains committed to the agreed framework for a solution, as set out in the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. Mr Ioannou conveyed the strong political will of the President of the Republic to continue the effort, through diplomatic channels, by promoting concrete and targeted proposals that will bring the two sides to the dialogue table.
The Cypriot Government, the Interior Minister stressed, has repeatedly demonstrated through its actions its readiness and willingness to cooperate, aiming at a comprehensive, just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the principles and values of the European Union and international law. As Mr Ioannou pointed out, the solution of the Cyprus problem should create the conditions that will give all legal residents of Cyprus the right to live and co-exist in a modern, European state, in conditions of security and stability. Moreover, the Minister expressed the certainty that the resolution of the Cyprus problem will have multiple benefits not only for the legitimate inhabitants of the island, but also for the European Union and the Eastern Mediterranean region and will strengthen the stabilising role played by our country in a region characterised by conflicts and geopolitical instability.
On the sidelines of his participation in the event at the Municipality of Serres, Mr. Ioannou had a meeting with the Mayor Mrs. Varvara Mitliaga, with whom they discussed issues related to local government. The Minister had the opportunity to inform Mrs Mitliaga about the start of the reform of local government in Cyprus on 1 July. At the same time, they discussed the challenges faced by local communities in Greece, where the Local Government Reform has been implemented for years. In this context, the Mayor of Serres informed the Minister of Interior about how the Municipality uses funds for the development of projects aimed at improving the quality of life of the citizens. Finally, Mr. Ioannou and Mrs. Mitliaga exchanged views on issues that concern the Cypriot community of the Municipality of Serres and examined ways of their effective management.
Finally, Mr. Ioannou visited Vergina, Imathia, where he was shown around the Tombs of Vergina.
