[PIO] Participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the EU Foreign Affairs Council

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos participated in the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), which took place today in Luxembourg. The main issues addressed by the Council were the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, the latest developments in the Middle East and Sudan.

In the context of the discussion on the Middle East, the Foreign Minister called for restraint and avoidance of further escalation and destabilisation in the region. At the same time, the Minister said that Cyprus remains extremely concerned about the situation in Gaza, reiterating our country's readiness to continue the maritime humanitarian corridor from Cyprus to Gaza.

Regarding the discussion on the situation in Ukraine, which took place at a joint meeting of EU Foreign and Defence Ministers, the need for further support for Ukraine was stressed. In his intervention, Kobos stressed that Cyprus looks forward to the full operation of the Ukraine Assistance Fund, while regarding sanctions, he reiterated the need for effective implementation as well as addressing their circumvention.

On the latest developments in Sudan, the Minister said that Cyprus is committed to sending humanitarian aid and supporting initiatives for the democratic transition of the country, but also to prevent migration flows to the EU.

It is noted that an EU-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) High Level Forum on Regional Security and Cooperation was held after the end of the Council's work. The Forum was attended, together with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and EU Foreign Ministers, the Secretary General of the GCC Council, the Foreign Ministers of the GCC member states, as well as the EU Special Representative for the Gulf.
