Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos participated in the Foreign Affairs Council, which took place yesterday in Luxembourg. The Council discussed the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, the Western Balkans, the situation in Georgia and the situation in the Great Lakes region.
During the discussion on Ukraine, the Foreign Minister expressed Cyprus' solidarity with Ukraine, stressing that the European Union (EU) should take all necessary decisions to ensure that EU support continues for as long as necessary in a robust and predictable manner. He welcomed the adoption of the 14th sanctions package by the Council, stressing that the framework for dealing with the circumvention of sanctions should be significantly strengthened.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, he stressed that Cyprus supports the implementation of the US President's plan and in particular UN Security Council Resolution 2735, calling on all parties to work to create conditions that will lead to the launch of a peace process. He stressed that any inflammatory statements aimed at further escalation and destabilisation in the region are condemned and that Cyprus has not been and will not be part of the crisis. He stressed that the crisis should be prevented from spilling over into the region, especially Lebanon, and expressed Cyprus' full support for the intensive diplomatic efforts of the US and France.
In relation to the Western Balkans, the Ministers discussed with their counterparts from the Western Balkans in light of the growing geopolitical competition and challenges facing the region. The Minister expressed Cyprus' firm commitment and support to the accession path of the Western Balkan partners and encouraged their full alignment with the EU's objectives and decisions in the framework of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Regarding the situation in Georgia, the Ministers underlined the need to respect democracy, EU values and principles as an integral part of its European course. On the Great Lakes, the need to effectively implement the EU Strategy for the region was stressed and support for the peace processes in Luanda and Nairobi was underlined, as the success of both initiatives is key to regional peace.
