Finance Minister Makis Kerynos represented the Republic of Cyprus at the General Affairs Council on Cohesion Policy issues, which took place in Luxembourg on 18 June 2024.
During the Council's proceedings, a discussion was held on the link between Cohesion Policy and the new Strategic Agenda of the European Union (EU) 2024-2029, which is expected to be adopted by the European Council at the end of June 2024. There was also a discussion on the link between Cohesion Policy and reforms. In addition, Ministers adopted Council Conclusions on the Communication on the 9th Report on the Future of Cohesion Policy.
In his intervention, the Finance Minister stressed the need to align the EU's strategic objectives with policies that promote solidarity and harmonious development throughout the EU, such as the Cohesion Policy, which must continue. Synergy between Cohesion Policy and the Strategic Agenda is vital to achieve balanced development for all EU regions.
He further argued that Cohesion Policy, which invests heavily in the green and digital transition, should live up to its role as recognised in the EU Treaty for economic, social and territorial cohesion, and act as a key tool to further strengthen the Single Market.
Cyprus considers that Cohesion Policy and reforms are two key tools which should be implemented in a way that ensures decentralised decision-making, the active participation and cooperation of all stakeholders at European, national and local level, and the integration of the unique characteristics and capabilities of each country to promote the overall growth and prosperity of the EU.
