The members of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mr. Kostis Efstathiou, will travel to Strasbourg the day after tomorrow, Sunday, 21 January, to participate in the work of the 1st part of the 2024 session of the CSCE, between 21 and 25 January 2024. The delegation will be accompanied by the Senior International Relations Officer Ms Gabriela Maragou and the First International Relations Officer of the Parliament Ms Elena Persianis.
The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Christodoulides will address the Plenary of Parliament on Tuesday, 23 January, and will have a meeting with the members of the Cypriot delegation. The Permanent Delegation of the Republic and the Cypriot delegation to the CSCE will host a reception in honour of the President of the Republic in the presence of members of the Assembly and officials of the Council of Europe. Efstathiou, as Rapporteur on the issue of allegations of inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in places of detention in Europe, will present a relevant resolution and report to the Plenary as well as his Opinion on the issue of the exploitation of minors in Europe. Other issues to be addressed at the Summit include recent developments in the Middle East following the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, the instrumentalisation of the migration issue during election campaigns and safeguarding press freedom and journalists in Europe.
Elections will also be held to elect the new President of the Assembly and the new Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights.
The Assembly will also be addressed by the President of Montenegro, Mr. Jakov Milatović, the Prime Minister of Liechtenstein, Mr. Daniel Risch and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport of Liechtenstein, Ms. Dominique Hasler, representing the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe during this six-month period.
