The Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr Marios Panagidis, participated in the Informal Meeting of Ministers of Competitiveness for Internal Market and Industry, held in Genk on 8-9 February 2024, in the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).
The Summit addressed the issues of the competitiveness of European industry and the robustness of the EU's Internal Market.
In his speech, Mr Panagides stressed that the challenges facing the EU today have created the need to formulate an industrial policy capable of making Europe competitive and innovative. A comprehensive strategic framework is needed, he said, so that it can maintain its role as a driver of sustainable growth.
Panagides also participated in a workshop discussing the use of public procurement as a tool to achieve a green, innovative and socially just EU. He referred in detail to the actions and practices that Cyprus is implementing to this end.
In the margins of the meeting, Panagides also had a meeting with the former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta, during which they exchanged views on the state of the EU's Internal Market. It is noted that Mr Letta is preparing a high-level report on the state of the Internal Market at the request of the European Council.
