The informal EU Foreign Affairs Council, composed of Trade Ministers, took place today in Valencia, Spain. Cyprus was represented by the Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr. Marios Panagides.
The discussions focused on the trade aspects of the recently announced Economic Security Strategy. In his intervention, Mr Panagides stressed the important role of trade policy and international partnerships in strengthening the EU's Economic Security. In this context, he stressed in particular the need to continue trade negotiations with partners who share our concerns and interests, the effective use of the existing EU toolbox in addressing identified risks and the close cooperation between the European Commission and Member States in risk assessment, particularly in the area of critical technologies.
In the ensuing discussion on the EU-India trade negotiations, Mr Panagides shared his views on the EU-India trade negotiations. Regarding areas of particular Cypriot interest, Panagides stressed the importance of opening India's market in the agri-food sector, while referring to services, he praised the importance of ambitious provisions in maritime services. Furthermore, he underlined the need for a high degree of protection of iconic EU Geographical Indications.
Finally, during a working lunch, the '27' had the opportunity to exchange views on the current state of the EU's bilateral trade relations with third countries. Particular emphasis was placed on trade relations with Mexico, Chile and Mercosur.
