The Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr Marios Panagidis, participated in the EU Competitiveness Council (Internal Market and Industry), which took place today, Thursday 7 December 2023 in Brussels.
The Council adopted a General Approach on the Proposal for a Regulation establishing a framework of measures to strengthen Europe's zero-net-emission technology product manufacturing ecosystem ("Zero Net Zero Emission Industry Act" - "NZIA"). In his intervention, Mr Panagidis welcomed the compromise text and supported a swift conclusion of the negotiations. He warmly welcomed the inclusion of sustainable alternative fuels (SAF) in the list of strategic net zero emission technologies, following a joint request by Cyprus and other Member States. He also welcomed the inclusion of a provision that reduces administrative hassle in relation to tenders for Renewable Energy Projects, especially for small markets such as Cyprus.
Ministers also exchanged views on the proposed Regulation on the prohibition of forced labour products on the EU market. Panagides fully supported the intended purpose of the Proposal, arguing that the active role of the Commission at all stages would be crucial for the proper implementation of the Regulation.
Denmark, France and Germany raised under "Other Business" the need to adopt measures to reduce administrative burdens on companies in unprecedented circumstances, and in particular, following pandemic and geopolitical crises. In addition, Member States participating in the Unified Patent Court (UPC) Agreement, in a joint statement, welcomed its launch.
Finally, during an informal working lunch in the presence of the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Mr. Thierry Breton, there was a discussion on the more active involvement of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the Net Zero Economy.
