The Director General of the Directorate General of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Andreas A. Gregoriou, participated on 16 and 17 May 2024 in the 3rd International Water Forum on "Challenges and Opportunities for Drinking Water in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans".

The Forum was held in Athens, with the main organizers being the Centre for European Studies and Studies "Ioannis Kapodistrias", the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Democritus University of Thrace and the UNESCO Chair of the Democritus University of Thrace.

The purpose of the Forum was to discuss among experts in the water sector and to examine prospects for strengthening their cooperation in areas of common interest, as well as common challenges regarding water security and water resources.

In his brief welcome address, Mr. Gregoriou said. Addressing these challenges is a matter of utmost national importance for the Government of Cyprus, which over the past decades has invested in actions to enhance available water supplies, using both conventional and non-conventional sources such as desalination and reuse of reclaimed water, as well as measures to limit water demand in order to balance the gap between supply and demand. As the impacts of climate change increase, we must unite around the protection and conservation of our most precious resource."

Gregoriou presented the policies of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment to address water scarcity and drought in Cyprus, focusing on water resource management packages and water supply-demand management, indicating the measures and actions taken.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, adopts and implements policies aimed at the sustainable and integrated management of water resources, since it is a prerequisite for sustainable development, improvement and protection of the quality of life of the inhabitants of Cyprus.
