The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Mr. Filippos Hadjizaharias, participated in the work of the Research and Space Council held today in Brussels. The Deputy Minister was accompanied by the Director General Dr Neophytos Papadopoulos.
In the framework of the Council, a discussion was held on the use of research as a tool for economic and industrial recovery and resilience. In his intervention, Mr. Hadjizaharias presented the new Research and Innovation Strategy (R&I) 2024-2026 of the Republic of Cyprus. The strategy focuses on promoting research in line with the "smart specialisation" strategy and assessing the impact of public investment made in the field of research. Referring to the European context, he underlined the need to adopt an integrated approach, which addresses the fragmentation of the research landscape through the creation of clusters of joint research activity promoting the exploitation of research results in the real economy.
In relation to Space, the Ministers exchanged views on the future of European space policy. Mr Hadjizaharias highlighted the importance of the EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence. He noted the fact that the successful implementation of defence-oriented programmes would have positive consequences for a wide range of political and security sectors, including maritime surveillance, border management and air traffic management. He also pointed out that promoting such a policy focus requires strong cooperation between Member States and active space actors sharing the same approach, as well as serious investment and the development of an entrepreneurial space ecosystem in Europe.
Ministers also adopted:
[A](a) Conclusions on the impact of R&D in the policy-making process,
(b) Conclusions on Space Traffic Management (STM) and (c) Council Recommendation on retaining and attracting talent in the EU.
Finally, during the working lunch, the 27 exchanged views on the challenges in designing and implementing policies to promote gender equality and the involvement of young people in R&D.
