Deputy Minister to the President Mrs.Irene Piki participated today as a speaker at the Green Agenda Cyprus Summit.
The Deputy Minister's intervention focused on the strategic priorities set in the Government Programme and presented the policies included in it with the aim of improving the lives of citizens, with particular emphasis on the green transition.
In her opening remarks, she pointed out that climate change and its ever-increasing and intensifying impacts are the greatest challenge facing the planet today, noting that it is inextricably linked to planetary health. The Eastern Mediterranean region, he added, is one of the fastest warming regions in the world, making the effects of climate change more visible. This, she said, underscores the need to promote the green transition and effectively safeguard public health.
Ms Piki also said that the Government, having a clear vision and roadmap for promoting clean energy, addressing energy poverty and lifting energy isolation, is implementing concrete policies and measures, with the green transition being one of the six priority axes that have people at the centre. Policies for the green transition, he pointed out, are approached horizontally rather than piecemeal and are based on three pillars: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transforming the economy towards sustainability and protecting the environment.
Specific policies and measures he mentioned include, among others, the implementation of sponsorship schemes that support energy upgrading of households and businesses, such as "Photovoltaics for All", the promotion of tax reform, through which energy efficiency measures for households and businesses are being implemented, and the implementation of the "Green Transition for All" programme.
