Mr Petros Galidis, Assistant Commissioner for Communications and Chairman of the "European and Mediterranean Telecommunications Regulators Group" (EMERG), together with Mr. Michael Nikolaou participated in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Conference - "Global Symposium for Regulators 2024" (GSR-24) held in Kampala, Uganda from 1 July to 4 July 2024.

The Conference was attended by Ministers, heads and representatives of electronic communications regulators and other organizations from around the world. Important issues and new developments in Electronic Communications (EC) were discussed, particularly on how to maximise the potential of digital technologies to improve people's lives.

Key topics included how to regulate artificial intelligence and robotics, how to build an inclusive, secure and sustainable space economy and how to address the challenges of climate change.

Other sessions encouraged knowledge exchange, learning and the development of UN networks, and others explored how regulation can go hand in hand with innovation. The Conference also adopted the document "Best practices guidelines helping to chart the course of transformative for positive impact".

The Cyprus delegation actively participated in the discussions with substantive interventions in the sessions with references to both EMERG and Cyprus, while Mr. Galides was also the moderator of the session (Session 4) entitled "Mastering Digital Transformation", in which diverse challenges of digital transformation were discussed, including:

Accessibility and affordability of digital public services: How to address remaining barriers to digital inclusion?

Digital public infrastructure: Next-level regulation requires bridging historical silos and strengthening cooperation to ensure security, data protection and privacy. What policy and regulatory measures are in place? What is working? What is not working?

Building trust in the transformation process: Are we there yet? Growing and sustaining open source in government requires new skills and sustainable business plans to maintain systems. It also requires engagement with open source communities and local ecosystems. What are the solutions?

Ensuring quality of service in digital infrastructure, services and applications: Who is responsible?

Also at the conference, Mr. Galidis gave interview, in which he reported on the main conclusions of the "Mastering Digital Transformation" session (Session 4), which he coordinated as EMERG Chair for 2024, the important role and priorities of EMERG, and the extent to which regional cooperation contributes to making connectivity universal, meaningful and relevant and to accelerating Digital Transformation.
