[PIO] Participation of Ms Charalambidou in the OECD World Forum and bilateral meetings

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Forum on Combating Corruption and Promoting Integrity concludes today with the participation of the Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).Ms Irene Charalambidou, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and Special Representative on Anti-Corruption.

In her intervention, Ms. Charalambidou raised the issue of the protection of journalists and whistleblowers and said that there is evidence that while their assistance is sought to uncover cases of corruption, they remain exposed and face threats to their lives and the lives of their families. "Despite the relevant European Directive and national laws where they exist, the way they are implemented should be monitored as to their effectiveness," Ms Charalambidou said.

Referring to the progress in the field of artificial intelligence, Ms. Charalambidou pointed out that there is potential for use by law enforcement authorities but at the same time artificial intelligence provides important specialized tools for committing financial and other crimes.

Commenting on Ms. Charalambidou's statements, the speakers acknowledged weaknesses and practical difficulties in monitoring the implementation of the relevant European Directive.

Moreover, on the occasion of her presence in Paris, Ms Charalambidou had a working lunch hosted in her honour by the Special Representative of the OSCE JC for Mediterranean Affairs, French Senator Mr. Pascal Allizard, attended by Senator Gisèle Jourda, Vice-Chair of the European Affairs Committee, Mrs. Dominique Vérien, Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women, Mrs. Pascale Gruny, Vice-Chair of the Social Affairs Committee and Vice-Chair of the France-Cyprus Friendship Group and the Ambassador of Cyprus to France Mr. Finally, Mrs Charalambidou attended part of the proceedings of the Plenary Session of the French Senate.
