On 16 November 2023, the conference on combating wildlife trafficking through European and national legislation took place in Brussels, under the auspices of Eurogroup for Animals and Animal Advocacy and Protection.
Cyprus was invited to participate as one of the first nine EU countries to implement the policy of banning the keeping of wild mammals as pets through national legislation.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment was represented by the Senior Officer for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Ms Marina Michailidou Kadi and the Veterinary Officer, Ms Natia Kalli.

According to the national legislation (The Protection and Welfare of Animals (Possession and Sale of Animals) Regulations 2021), persons who own animals that are not on the list of permitted species may keep them until the end of the animals' lives, provided that they are registered with the Cyprus Veterinary Services.
