The Department of Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Nicosia Dance House announce that the following have been selected to participate in the Dance Artist Hosting Programme of the State Gallery of Contemporary Art - Majestic, which will be implemented during the period May - October 2024:

The proposals were selected by a three-member committee (Elena Panagiotou, Elena Antoniou, Maria Kaberi) from a total of 10 proposals submitted in the context of the relevant Open Call.
The committee unanimously selected the proposals based on the following criteria.
The Programme aims to create synergies between the arts in the context of the operation of the State Gallery, to highlight the multimodality of the works in the permanent exhibition and their alternative narratives, to attract different audience groups and to promote the work of contemporary Cypriot artists.
Three public actions will take place per hosting period of the Programme: a seminar/participatory workshop, a discussion/lecture and a performance (in progress).

When the hostess gets quiet...: performance in progress
"In "when the hostess gets quiet..." I invite you to a walk we will take together and a walk we will take apart. I have the opportunity to host you for a while in the space that previously hosted me and to share with you journeys I have taken between rooms, paintings, doors, sculptures, and stairs."
The work is a performance-in-progress stemming from the performer's participation in the Dance Hospitality Program at the State Gallery. Through creative movement and writing, she has had the opportunity to interact with the works in the permanent exhibition and approach her body as a channel of communication between the exhibits in the same space.
Performance duration: approximately 40 minutes.

I get carried away: Workshop This workshop is offered as part of the Dance Hospitality Program at the State Gallery, where the performer had the opportunity to explore her relationship with the works in the space. Through suggested activities that she used during the residency, she will spend time with participating individuals to observe works from the permanent exhibition, and watch for any activations or associations that occur within them. They will seek to make space for themselves to experience the works through the body, personal experiences and imagination. Having the works as their starting point and as their interlocutors, they will be led into personal creative explorations through movement and writing.

Understanding the Self through our engagement with the arts and creative practices: Discussion
Engagement with the arts can lead one to a temporary escape from the here-and-now and "transport" him/her into the past, the future, or a parallel scenario. When the person comes back from such an escape, something has changed within him/her, either in a small or large way. Through this process, the arts can influence the way we understand ourselves and those around us, and become reference points for our personal or collective lives. Individuals participating in the discussion will share relevant personal experiences and hear reflections from artists who use their practices as a means of understanding themselves and their experiences. The discussion will be enriched by the participation of researchers from the field of cultural psychology working on the dynamic relationship between cultural objects and identity.
