A delegation of the House of Representatives to the Conference on the Future of Europe, consisting of the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Chrysi Pantelidis and Ms Alexandra Attalidou, participated yesterday in an interparliamentary meeting of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (EP), on the expectations of national parliaments for the Future of Europe Conference.

The meeting addressed priority issues for the EP and national parliaments, such as European democracy, EU political priorities and the proposed establishment of a permanent mechanism for public consultation between citizens and EU institutions in the decision-making process at the European level.

In her intervention on the issue of European democracy, Ms Attalidou stressed the need to revise European electoral law in a way that strengthens the role of citizens in the election of their representatives, both in the EP and in the national parliaments. The proposal to create a pan-European constituency in the elections for the election of MEPs, Ms Attalidou said, should ensure a link between citizens and elected representatives, with provisions for adequate representation of the sexes and all geographical areas of the Union. In this context, she added, the upgrading of the role of the heads of political groups in the EP, who should be the candidates for the presidency of the European Commission, should be discussed in parallel, in order to increase the democratic nature of the European institutions.
