The Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (RSRC) of the Ministry of Defence announces that on Saturday 20 January 2024 it received information concerning the departure from Lebanon to Cyprus of two vessels with migrants on 18 and 20 January 2024. Based on the above-mentioned information, the CSEED activated the National Search and Rescue Plan "NEARCHOS" in order to locate the boats in question.
After extensive searches, three boats have been located and a total of 188 persons have been rescued, which were transferred on the 21st of January to the Port of Larnaca for further handling by the competent Services of the Republic of Cyprus.

The first boat with 15 migrants was located on 21 January at 03:37 at a distance of 5 nautical miles (NM) South of Cape Greco, the second boat with 145 migrants was located on 21 January at 04:15 at a distance of 12 NM East of Cape Greco and the third boat with 28 migrants was located on 21 January at 10:40 at a distance of 12 NM Southeast of Cape Greco.
During the execution of the aforementioned operation, the CPSD was informed by the rescuers that, two hours earlier, a person in the first boat had fallen into the water with the intention of swimming to the shore, without specifying the position of the boat at that time.
Searches were carried out to locate the missing person, but after 52 hours from the receipt of the information, they were unsuccessful.
Therefore, based on the evaluation of the information made available so far and taking into account the extensive searches carried out by the E.D. means involved, the CPSD terminated the search for the missing person at 08:00 this morning.
The E-D operations involved a helicopter of the 460MED and Unmanned Aircraft of the 470MED, the Air Force Command, as well as Warships of the Naval Command of the General Staff of the National Guard, a helicopter of the Air Operations Unit, vessels of the Port and Maritime Police and foot patrols of the Famagusta Police Directorate, Cyprus Police, foot patrols of the British Bases of Dhekelia, specialised nurses of the MEDEVAC teams of the Ambulance Service of the State Health Services Agency, as well as drones and mobile camera systems of KSEED.
