On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December 2021) and with the aim of raising awareness and fostering empathy in relation to issues concerning persons with disabilities, the House of Representatives carried out awareness-raising activities during the month of December among the parliamentary body, parliamentary assistants, parliamentary staff and society at large.
The actions of the House of Representatives concluded on Thursday, 16 December 2021, with the operation of a Human Library by the non-governmental organization "Human Library-Cyprus" at the reception area of the "Filoxenia" Conference Centre.
The Human Library does not have books but people willing to share their stories and experiences, with the aim of combating prejudice and promoting diversity.
The Human Books available were either directly or indirectly related to disability issues. Members of Parliament, parliamentary assistants and staff of the Parliament, as well as parliamentary editors had the opportunity to "borrow" Human Books and ask questions, an action that was a valuable experience in raising awareness and understanding that the inclusion of persons with disabilities in every aspect of our lives is not easy, requires collective and sustained effort, but is a collective gain and an important opportunity for dignified coexistence.
