The initiative of the Pancyprian Coordinating Council for Volunteerism to hold today's dialogue with the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) active in the health sector makes me very happy. Through today's open dialogue we have the opportunity to listen to the real problems faced by patients in their entirety and to answer the questions that concern you.
The voluntary offer of your services to patients confirms the sensitivity and the willingness of organised groups in our society to support social cohesion. It is our conviction that organised volunteering can offer a lot, acting as a complement to the role of the state.
The Ministry of Health considers financial support for NGOs to be very important so that they can be functional, productive and sustainable organisations. For this reason, every year, the Ministry of Health, in compliance with the principles of transparency, allocates annual grants to voluntary organisations on the basis of evaluation criteria, set in accordance with the rules of good administration, which on the one hand protect the provider, i.e. the State, and on the other hand the recipient, i.e. the voluntary organisation.
The strict application of the defined criteria ensures the uniform and equal treatment of the applicants, while assisting the correct interpretation of the priorities and rights of NGOs.
For the year 2023, the total amount granted as state aid to NGOs under the 2 State Aid Schemes was €3,015,000.
For the year 2023, the total amount granted as state aid to NGOs under the 2 State Aid Schemes was €3,015,000. The approved appropriations for the year 2024 are in the range of €3,700,000.
In conclusion, I wish to assure you that we will continue to be at the disposal of NGOs and volunteers to discuss and exchange views in order to find solutions to the problems identified. Volunteerism is the essence of Civil Society and systematises the pro bono provision of services for the benefit of society, and this is an important parameter for our Ministry to continue to support them.
