[PIO] OHIO recommends caution on laser pointers and laser toys in the wake of a child's recent vision loss

The Ophthalmology Clinic of the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital was recently confronted with a sad incident when it examined a case where a child was diagnosed with significant and permanent loss of vision in one eye due to extensive burns while playing.

The accident in question was caused by a laser pointer (laser torch) purchased from the internet. The children were using it to directly follow the flashlight, which caused multiple burns to the retina, the membrane at the back of the eye containing the light-sensitive cells that allow us to see.

In this context, the OCR calls on everyone, especially parents, to check both the appropriateness and the use of products in their children's possession. Specifically for laser toys, they should never be looked directly into the eyes, pointed at other people, mirrors or other reflective surfaces. These guidelines, as the Agency stresses, apply to all laser toys.

In addition, as the Agency states, the public should be particularly careful, as in the event of an injury there is little scope for repairing the damage, as the laser beam remains powerful even if it is several metres away from its source.

In case anything similar is found related to children's eyes and vision, please contact the Accident and Emergency Department of OCYPE immediately at 112 or contact the Ophthalmology Clinic of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital at 22603550.
