The EU decided to designate 2022 as the European Year of Youth, having diagnosed the serious negative impact of the pandemic on young people. Therefore, the theme of the discussion to be held at the opening event of the "Free University" is "The impact of the pandemic on young people's mental health". The panel will include Ms Themis Christofidou, Director General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission, Professor Constantinos Fellas, Senior Vice Rector of the University of Nicosia, Mr. Andreas Hadjitotofis, Lecturer in Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cyprus and Mrs Christiana Xenophontos, Member of the Council of the European Youth Forum.
Purpose of the "Citizens' Free University"
The "Citizens' Free University" is organised by the Office of the Citizens' Commissioner in cooperation with the University of Nicosia. The aim of the "Free University" is to widen citizens' access to information, but also to create a favourable environment for the exchange of views and the submission of new proposals that embody existing policies in relation to the major issues facing our society. It will allow citizens to participate more effectively in public life, as access to information promotes transparency, protects citizens' rights and supports scientific research. The Citizens' Free University will focus on issues that challenge modern societies at local, European and global level, such as health, education, the climate crisis and employment.
The Citizens' Free University lectures will take place once a month, at the University of Nicosia, and will end in December 2022.
