The Department of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment was awarded the National Energy Globe Cyprus 2023 Award for its LIFE - KEDROS project by the Commercial Counsellor and Head of the Commercial Department of the Austrian Embassy in Athens - Advantage Austria, Mr. Christoph Sturm.
The award ceremony took place on Thursday, 25 January, at the Athalassa Information and Education Centre, while the event was welcomed by the Austrian Ambassador to Cyprus Dr. Susanne Bachfischer, the Director of the Office of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mr. Theodolos Makriyannis and the Deputy Director Dr. Andreas Christou. Also, from the network of partners of the LIFE - KEDROS project, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Frederick University gave a welcome address.
The LIFE - KEDROS project was implemented by a consortium consisting of the Department of Forests, the Cyprus Forestry Association and Frederick University through the Nature Conservation Unit. The project was implemented under the European Union's LIFE programme with the aim of sustainable holistic management and protection of Cypriot cedar forests. The outcome of the project was not only to protect the environment by increasing forest area and carbon retention, but at the same time to have a positive socio-economic impact by promoting agro-tourism, enhancing local employment and the well-being of the local community.
With more than 180 participating countries, the Energy Globe Awards is now the world's most recognised environmental award. The Energy Globe Award is the inspiration and initiative of the Austrian pioneer in the field of energy and environmental protection, Mr. Wolfgang Neumann.
