In the context of the First Part of the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the process of reconstitution of the Assembly's Committees, MEP Mr. Kostis Efstathiou was unanimously re-elected, for a second consecutive term, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Culture, Diversity and Cultural Heritage.
Mr Efstathiou thanked the members of the Subcommittee for their confidence and presented the priorities and main lines of action of the Subcommittee for 2022.
The Cypriot MEP suggested that a review of the broader policy pursued by the Council of Europe and its individual statutory mechanisms for the promotion of cultural diversity be carried out, as well as the development of new possible forms of interaction and synergies between stakeholders. He also referred to the 'Cultural Routes' initiative aimed at strengthening intercultural dialogue. Mr Efstathiou also noted that particular emphasis will be placed on sites of particular historical memory and the importance of their preservation, as well as on the negative impact of climate change on the protection of cultural heritage, an issue which will be extensively addressed by the Commission in the coming months.
