In the framework of a meeting of the Committee on Culture, Education, Science and Mass Media of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the member of the Cypriot delegation Mr Kostis Efstathiou chaired today a hearing for the Council of Europe Museum Award. This annual institution, in which Mr Efstathiou participates in his capacity as the Assembly's representative, awarded this year's prize to the Sybir Memorial Museum in Poland. This museum was recognised for its outstanding contribution to the memory of those exiled by the Soviet regime in Kazakhstan, Siberia and Northern Russia in the period following the end of the Second World War.

Welcoming the representatives of the Sybir Museum to the session, Mr Efstathiou referred to the importance and scope of the Council of Europe Museum Award. He also praised the role played by cultural institutions in promoting and preserving historical memory and raising the awareness of the younger generation regarding the actions of individuals who selflessly defended the principles of freedom, democracy and human rights.

Moreover, during the session, amendments tabled by Mr Efstathiou to a Report on the special educational needs of children with disabilities were unanimously accepted. These amendments relate to the mandatory adoption of legislative and other measures to provide individualized services that focus on the special needs, unique talents, skills and interests of children with disabilities. In any case, Efstathiou stressed, the new digital tools that will be developed to provide improved educational services must be tailored in such a way as to facilitate the access of these children to the interactive digital space and not to discriminate against them.
