The Statistical Office announces the release of the report "Motor Vehicle Registrations" covering the period January - March 2024.
In March 2024, total motor vehicle registrations reached 4,238, a decrease of 0.7% compared to 4,270 in March 2023. Passenger car saloon registrations decreased by 4.8% to 3,316 from 3,484 in March 2023.
The main developments in vehicle registrations in the period January - March 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, can be summarized as follows.
(a) The total number of registered vehicles increased by 25.8% in the period January - March 2024 to 12.827, compared to 10,193 in the same period of 2023.
(b) Passenger car saloon registrations increased by 23.3% to 10,189, compared to 8,264 in the same period of 2023. Of the total passenger car saloon registrations, 4,465 or 43.8% were new and 5,724 or 56.2% were used cars. Rental cars in particular declined 22.3% to 908.
(c) The share of gasoline-powered saloon cars in this category of vehicles decreased in the January-March 2024 period to 49.2% (from 59.0% in the same period in 2023), as did the share of diesel-powered cars (from 11.0% in 2023 to 9.9% in 2024). In contrast, the share of electric vehicles (from 2.6% in 2023 to 3.8% in 2024) and hybrids (from 27.4% to 37.2%) increased.
(d) Bus registrations increased to 64 in January-March 2024, up from 21 in the same period in 2023.
(e) Freight vehicle registrations increased to 1,445 in the January-March 2024 period, up 40.4% from 1,029 in the same period in 2023. Specifically, light trucks increased 44.9% to 1,149, heavy trucks increased 4.8% to 152, road tractors (trailers) increased 69.0% to 49, and rental vehicles increased 53.2% to 95.
[F] Motorcycle registrations < 50ke increased to 240 in January-March 2024, compared to 28 in the same period in 2023.
[G] Motorcycle registrations > 50ke increased 0.7% to 727 in January-March 2024, compared to 722 in the same period in 2023.

Methodological Information
Purpose and Coverage
Data on Motor Vehicle Registrations are collected on a monthly basis. They relate to new motor vehicle registrations as recorded by the Department of Road Transport.
Registrations are presented by category, make, type of power, new or used, engine capacity, country of manufacture and origin, and other vehicle characteristics, based on information maintained by the Motor Vehicle Registration Service in the Department of Road Transport.
Data collection
Data collection is carried out by the Statistical Service, which receives the necessary data from the Road Transport Department.
Definitions
"Motor vehicle" means any vehicle with an engine, which is its sole means of propulsion, intended for road use and used primarily for the transport of persons or goods, i.e:
- Saloon-type passenger cars, which include private cars, taxis, rental cars, educational vehicles and vehicles for the disabled;
- Buses, private and public;
- Cargo vehicles, which include heavy and light cargo vehicles, rental vehicles and road tractors (trailers),
- Mopeds or motorcycles, which include mopeds, tricycles, motorcycles and rental motorcycles,
- Tractors, agricultural and non-agricultural,
- Other vehicles, which include road rollers, motorised cranes, heavy vehicles and other vehicles of a special type and use.
Monthly Publication
The Motor Vehicle Registrations report has been published monthly since 1982 and is available free of charge in electronic format on the Statistics Office's web portal.
