[PIO] Motor Vehicle Registrations: January - December 2023

The Statistical Office announces the release of the report "Motor Vehicle Registrations" covering the period January - December 2023.

In December 2023, total motor vehicle registrations reached 2,994, an increase of 35.4% compared to 2,211 in December 2022. Passenger car saloon registrations increased by 45.5% to 2,468 from 1,696 in December 2022.

The main developments in vehicle registrations in the period January - December 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, can be summarised as follows.

(a) The total number of registered vehicles increased by 34.6% in the period January - December 2023 to 45.494, compared to 33,795 in the same period of 2022.

(b) Passenger car saloon registrations increased by 37.6% to 36,608, compared to 26,598 in the same period of 2022. Of the total passenger car saloon registrations, 14,637 or 40% were new and 21,971 or 60% were used cars. Rental cars in particular saw a 36% increase to 5,577.

[C](c) Bus registrations increased to 329 in 2023, up from 85 in 2022.

[D] Registrations of cargo vehicles increased to 4,374 in 2023, compared to 3,895 in the previous year, an increase of 12.3%. Specifically, light trucks increased 8.2% to 3,409, heavy trucks increased 40.9% to 534, road tractors (trailers) increased 67% to 157, and rental vehicles increased 1.1% to 274.

[E] Moped registrations < 50ke increased to 321 in January-December 2023, compared to 244 in the same period in 2022.

[F] Motorcycle registrations > 50ke increased 27.9% to 3.324 in 2023, compared to 2,598 in 2022.

[G] The main manufacturers of motor vehicles registered in Cyprus during 2023 were Japan (42.9%), Germany (13.9%), France (7.2%,), the United Kingdom (5.3%) and South Korea (4.9%).

(h) The majority (55%) of registered vehicles in 2023 were gasoline-powered, while 18% were diesel-powered, 2.9% were electric-powered, and 24.1% were hybrids. The corresponding percentages for 2022 were: 58.3%, 21.2%, 2.2% and 18.3%.

Methodological Information

Purpose and Coverage

Data on Motor Vehicle Registrations are collected on a monthly basis. They relate to new motor vehicle registrations as recorded by the Department of Road Transport.

Registrations are presented by category, make, type of power, new or used, engine capacity, country of manufacture and origin, and other vehicle characteristics, based on information maintained by the Motor Vehicle Registration Service in the Department of Road Transport.

Data collection

Data collection is carried out by the Statistical Service, which receives the necessary data from the Road Transport Department.

Definitions

"Motor vehicle" means any vehicle with an engine, which is its sole means of propulsion, intended for road use and used primarily for the transport of persons or goods, i.e:

- Saloon-type passenger cars, which include private cars, taxis, rental cars, educational vehicles and vehicles for the handicapped

- Buses, private and public

- Cargo vehicles, which include heavy and light cargo vehicles, rented vehicles and road tractors (trailers)

- Mopeds or motorcycles, which include mopeds, tricycles, motorcycles and rental motorcycles

- Tractors, agricultural and non-agricultural

- Other vehicles, which include road rollers, motor cranes, heavy vehicles and other vehicles of a special type and use.

Monthly Edition

The report "Motor Vehicle Registrations" has been published on a monthly basis since 1982 and is available free of charge in electronic format on the Statistics Office's web portal.
