The Ministry of Interior informs the public that, due to the passing of the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Law of 2023 on 16 June 2023, in the period June-October 2023, the number of applications received by the Planning Authorities was approximately twice as high as in the same period last year. In particular, in that period, a total of 6,333 applications were received, of which 2,595 were submitted in the month of October, when the provision for a reduced VAT rate of 5% for first homes expired. Similarly, in the period June-October 2022, the number of applications submitted was 3,406.
Given the large number of applications submitted in October, there may be delays in the processing of planning applications. The Department of Planning and Zoning asks for the understanding of the public and planners and apologizes in advance for any delay and inconvenience caused.
It is recalled that, on the instructions of the Minister of Interior, Mr. Constantinos Ioannou, a plan with 22 measures, with a time horizon for implementation in the first half of 2024, has been drawn up, which seeks to modernize and simplify the development licensing procedures and reduce the delays observed in the time of examination of applications. In addition, in view of the transfer of licensing to the new Provincial Authorities from 1 July 2024, the Ministry of Interior has proceeded with the recruitment of 105 people, who will staff the existing Authorities at this stage and subsequently the EDAs, in order to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
