The Ministry of Health announces that today, 9 January 2022:
- 4 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 657.
- 251 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 91 are in serious condition. A proportion of 75.3% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 17 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 139,709 molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests have been performed.
- 3,012 (positivity rate: 2.16%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 204,372.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 4 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:
- Male, aged 67 years, who died on 8 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Female, aged 53, who died on 8 January at Larnaca General Hospital.
- Female, aged 78, who died on 8 January at Nicosia General Hospital.
- Female, aged 78, who died on 8 January at Nicosia General Hospital.
- Female, aged 86 years, who died on 9 January at Limassol General Hospital.
Consequently, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 657*, of which:
- 413 males (62.9%), and
- 244 females (37.1%).
The average age of those dying from the disease is 75.9 years.
*Inadvertently, 4 deaths were reported in the 8 January bulletin, while one death involved a correction. Therefore the total of 657 deaths today is correct.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 251 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the inpatient units of the OCHS, of which 91 are in serious condition or in NICU conditions.
Of the 91 patients in serious condition, 29 are intubated, 3 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 59 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 139,709 diagnoses performed, 8,701 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 131,008 by the antigen rapid test, 3,012 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 69 cases from 548 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 97 cases out of 4,421 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 292 cases out of 3,199 samples taken through private initiative.
- 41 cases out of 406 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 1,071 cases from 52,982 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 1,437 cases out of 78,026 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 5 cases from 127 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
