[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 7 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 7 January 2022:

- No patient deaths with COVID-19 as the final cause of death were recorded, and therefore the total number of deaths remains 650.

- 230 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 81 are in serious condition. A proportion of 77.83% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 18 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 139,334 molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests have been performed.

- 5,244 (positivity rate: 3.76%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 197,401.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

No deaths of patients with COVID-19 were recorded. Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 disease remains 650, of which:

- 411 males (63.2%), and

- 239 females (36.8%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 230 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 81 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 81 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 5 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 48 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 139,334 diagnoses made, 13,007 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 126,327 by the antigen rapid test method, 5244 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 138 cases from 1,030 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 55 cases out of 4,036 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 748 cases out of 7,220 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 62 cases out of 615 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 3,011 cases from 88,689 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 1,222 cases out of 37,638 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 7 cases from 104 samples taken under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  8. 1 case from 2 samples taken in the framework of controls in closed facilities.
