The Ministry of Health announces that today, 4 January 2022:
- 5 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 646.
- 209 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 76 are in serious condition. A proportion of 78% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 15 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 122,801 PCR and antigen rapid tests have been performed.
- 5457 (positivity rate: 4.44%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 183,178.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 5 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:
- A woman, aged 73 years, who died on 2 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Male, aged 82, who died on 3 January at Nicosia General Hospital.
- Male, aged 43, who died on 4 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Male, aged 43, who died on 4 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Male, aged 84, who died on 4 January at Paphos General Hospital.
- Female, aged 55, who died on 4 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 646, of which:
- 410 males (63.5%), and
- 236 females (36.5%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 209 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 76 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 76 patients in serious condition, 32 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator, and 40 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 122,801 diagnoses performed, 18,576 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 104,225 by the antigen rapid test method, 5457 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 490 cases from 3,121 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 143 cases out of 5,489 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 1067 cases out of 9,286 samples taken through private initiative.
- 25 cases out of 360 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 2715 cases from 70,186 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 1007 cases out of 34,039 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 10 cases from 317 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and special group screening through the Public Health Clinics.
In addition, the following tests have been carried out without detection of a case:
- 0 cases from 3 samples taken in the framework of audits in closed structures.
